A baby

"[Spouse] and I have been thinking about having a baby..."
— Mii, Tomodachi Life

baby is an optional Mii in Tomodachi Life, created when two Miis successfully marry and, at a later time, decide that they would like to have a baby. Having babies is optional, but it is required in order to unlock certain features, such as child photos in the Photo Studio, and two of the rankings at the Rankings Board. However, babies won't be listed in the Town Hall's Mii List until their child stage, which rests at approximately 4-5 days old. Both of the parents must have a "Very happy" rating or higher in order for the event to occur.

There is no limit as to how many babies can be born within a day to the island, but only one baby can be taken care of by a single family at a time. There is no restriction regarding how many babies can be born into a certain family, so a married couple may have had more children than there are apartments open.

If two married Miis have a child, either one or two of them will always be with the child until it grows up. Essentially, the married Miis will not divorce while still caring for a child, giving the player a chance to raise their relationship if it's low.

Having a Baby

HNI 0018

A mii thinking about having a baby.

Before any of the Miis can even think about getting a baby, they must first be married, as well as in good standing with each other, with both Miis being "Very happy" or better. Some time later, usually a few days, one of the Miis will tell the player that they are thinking about having a baby, assuming that the Baby Option is enabled. Upon arriving at their apartment, they will be seen looking worried as soft music plays in the background.

Upon tapping their thought bubble, the Mii tells the player that it and its spouse were thinking of having a baby. If the player chooses "Great idea!", the Mii says, "I'm so glad you think so!", and the married couple will have a baby between 36 hours to two days later. If the player chooses "Bad timing", the Mii says, "I guess you're right..." and there will be no baby, but they will not gain sadness. However, sometimes the married couple will not have a baby at all; although the case is rare, the idea is possible. However, if they don't have a baby, it will not stop other attempts in the future.

Parents usually give baby requests within eight days after their last child has left.

Birth

"Guess what? We had a baby!"
— Korban, Tomodachi Life

When the baby arrives and the player is overlooking the island, a yellow cell phone will appear and ring, with either the father or mother of the newborn baby on the other line. The player will come to the house of the parents. There, a music box melody plays as the two Miis await happily. The female Mii will be witnessed holding the newborn baby, wrapped in a blanket and wearing a bonnet, but with its back turned. She will say, "Guess what? We had a baby!", then proceed to ask the player a series of questions:

  • Are you hoping we had a boy or a girl? - The player can pick a gender - a boy or a girl - or have the game decide one at random. Upon answering, the baby's face is revealed, which is an obvious mix of the two parents' facial features. The baby utters a coo in return.
  • How does he/she look? - The player can pick to keep the generated appearance, or edit the baby Mii's face. Editing the generated result is the only way a baby Mii's face can be modified until the baby becomes fully-grown.
  • We like the name [Name], what do you think? - The player can have the parents use their own, random preferred name, think of another, or name the newborn him/herself. As with editing the face and personality, this cannot be changed again until the baby is grown up.
  • What kind of personality do you think [he'll/she'll] have? - The player can make the baby share the personality of one of its parents, have it picked randomly, or define the personality themselves. The result, in combination with its gender, will determine the color scheme of the baby's clothes. Once picked, it may not be edited until the baby is fully grown.

After all the questions are asked, the mother will say, "We'll take good care of [Baby]. We hope you'll take care of [him/her] too, [Player]'s look-alike.", followed by the caption "[Baby] was born to [Mii 1] and [Mii 2].", and the player will be taken back to the island.

Babysitting

"[Baby] just won't stop crying. Could you help out?"
— Mii, Tomodachi Life

When visiting the married couple's house when they have a child, there is a 'Babysitting' option next to 'Visit'. This activates a minigame of sorts where the player either has to calm the baby down or play with them, depending on the stage.

When a baby is first born, at the baby and toddler stages, sometimes the player will randomly be called to assist the new parents who can't seem to calm the baby down. In this case, the player cannot exit until they've calmed the baby down or when, after a certain amount of time passes without success, the parent takes over and thanks you anyway after you failed.

If the parents need help, they will call you on the yellow cell phone. The player will then be taken to the house of the crying baby. This also goes for entering a house if the baby is crying. If one parent is present, they will hold the baby; if both are, only the mother holds it; at stages 3-5 it sits between them. Both parents will be sad; one of the two will then say, "[Baby] just won't stop crying. Could you help out?". If one parent is present, that parent will ask; if both are, the father will ask. You will then have the option to either help the child or not. If you choose to help, the parent asking will change from an upset expression to a happy one and say "Thank you.", leading to the mini-game. If you disregard helping the baby, the expressions don't change and the parent asking says "That's fine..." and you'll be returned to an overlook of the island or the parents' house and they will call you again.

Another version of this occurs if you enter the house when the baby isn't crying. The parent will ask, "Will you play with [Baby] for a while?", and you'll have the option to do so. The results are the same as above.

It is also possible that a baby will cry if they and their family go to bed around 9 p.m. or later, but in a situation like this, the cell phone won't ring. Instead, the player will hear crying sounds while overlooking the island itself. In order to calm the baby down, the player should go to Mii Homes, select the house where the crying baby is, touch 'Babysit', proceed in helping out and babysit until the baby stops crying. After this, the player should touch the 'return' icon and the family will sleep successfully. This only happens at stages 1-3.

Minigames

The minigame for a day old baby is where the player holds the baby in their arms and have to rock them until they stop crying, or fall asleep. There is a different rhythm each time and it is randomly selected. If the baby cries angrier and louder because he/she is rocked too hard, the parents will first time give a warning and the second time they will become mad and stop the babysitting, and the player will not win a prize.

The minigame for a 2-3 day old toddler is when the player has the option to play peek-a-boo or tickle them. It is random each time what action(s) will calm them down. Four spots are good for tickling, the top of the head, the chin, the feet, or the tummy. If the player tickles the tummy, the toddler can fart one time per babysit. If the player does it wrong, the toddler will rage by getting angry and wants to be left alone and the player may lose the game and not get an item. If the player tickles the baby on the tummy when he/she doesn't want them to, the baby will give a signal by trying to shake the hand off. If the player doesn't stop, the baby will rage by getting upset. When the player wants to babysit the child, the minigame could start in three ways: when the baby is happy, when the baby is uncomfortable, or when the baby has a normal expression. It will take a few actions to make the baby laugh or cry. If you play with/tickle the baby enough, they will begin laughing hysterically, in which you still earn a prize. If you continue to tickle the baby while it's laughing loudly long enough, it will eventually get tired and nod off to sleep.

The minigame for a 4-5 day old child is a game in the backyard where the player spins the stylus on the touch screen to spin the child around. Occasionally, one of the parents will say that if the player keeps spinning the child so fast, the child might get dizzy. Contrary to what the parent says, the child can be spun infinitely without getting dizzy. If the player waits too long without doing anything, the child will get mad and make noises. This mini-game will not start via a phone call from one of the child's parents.

If the player tries and succeeds in calming the baby down, they will get a prize. If the player gives up, he/she will still get a prize for helping and the parent(s) will say that you failed, and they attempt to cheer up the baby. If the player rocks the baby too hard, the parents will get angry and no prize will be won. You can only get a prize if the parent(s) call you to help.

Growing up

"[Child] has grown up so fast! It's time for [him/her] to leave the nest."
— Mii, Tomodachi Life

Baby Miis won't be babies forever. Over the course of five days, the baby will grow from an infant, to a toddler, and then to a small child. When the child turns six days old, it will be a fully-grown child, and the player has the option of either letting them move into the apartments, or sending them to the port as a traveler.

Upon choosing, you will have the option to make changes to the child's appearance and profile, and to give it a message to spread if you are sending it off. After this, the child will speak its first words, depending on which option you chose. The child's voice will be a randomized hybrid of its parents voices, which you can change before it leaves.

Upon getting a call from the yellow cell phone, the player will be taken to the couple's house, where the parents and fully grown child are waiting happily, and a modern remix of the music box melody that played when it was born plays. The father says, "[Child] has grown up so fast! It's time for [him/her] to leave the nest." The child waves, then the father asks, "Should we send [him/her] off to travel the world or have [him/her] move into [his/her] own apartment?". The player makes their decision, and the father says, "My thoughts exactly!"

  • If the child is staying, the player is given the option to edit its appearance. After which, the child will change its clothes and say its first words: "You've been such a great friend to us." The mother says, "I hope you'll keep in touch with our family." and the father says, "Take this as a memento." and hands the player a baby album.
  • If sending the child off to travel, the child's first words will be, "I can't wait to see the world!". The mother asks, "Do you want to make any changes to his/her profile before [he/she] leaves?". The player replies with either option, then the father asks, "Should [he/she] say anything special when [he/she] meets new people?". If the player chooses yes, they make a greeting the child uses when visiting different islands. After doing so, the child says, "Got it! I'll repeat those exact words whenever I meet someone new." Then the child changes into a traveling uniform and says, "All right, I'm off. Bye!". Once the child leaves, StreetPass is activated. The mother says, "[Child] has left to travel the world..." and the father says, "Take this as a memento." and hands the player a baby album.

There is only one chance to decide if the child stays or goes; the player cannot change their mind afterwards. If a child travels the world, they will only return for a short visit, and will never live on the island again. A child that stays on the island can be edited at any time, with the exception of their gender and age if they get in a relationship.

If the player has lost track of how old the baby is, the following is a general guideline:

  • Day 2: Infant
  • Day 3-4: Toddler
  • Day 5: Small child

The events that occur on each day:

  • Day 2: The baby learns to crawl.
  • Day 3: The toddler begins to stand up for a few seconds at a time, and its hair begins to develop further.
  • Day 4: The toddler consistently starts walking, though quite slowly.
  • Day 5: The child runs around without issue, their hair develops further, and their head takes on it's final shape.
  • Day 6: The child grows up and leaves its parents.

If the player chooses to have the child move into an apartment, but none are available (If you have 100 Miis already living on the island), or the player decides to have the child travel the world, but the maximum number of travelers is present (50 total) at the Port, the child will stay with their parents until either an apartment opens up, a traveler at the Port leaves. The next day you start the game, the parents will call again saying that their child is grown up, and the process repeats.

Family album

Main article: Family album

At the end of the child's time growing up, the player will be rewarded with viewing a baby album and the end credits. These can be reviewed in the Town Hall after the child has moved into an apartment or left to travel the world. A maximum of 50 albums can be held. Any special child's album that the player wants to keep can be locked and kept forever. If a child living on the island or either one of it's parents is deleted, that child's album will be removed, even if it has been locked.

Trivia

  • When a 4-day old baby is crying, it cannot be cheered up. When babysitting the 4-day old child by spinning it around, you can make it appear happy, but upon exiting the minigame, the child may still be crying.
  • When a baby has taken their first steps, their crib will be replaced by a bed.
  • The child doesn't make any snoring sounds when in bed during stages 4-6
  • Sometimes, with a 2-3 day old, if you play peekaboo while it is extremely happy (or you see the parent[s] playing peekaboo with the baby at 3-4 days old), it will laugh so hard it will fall to the side before righting itself back into a sitting position.
  • If the baby is 2-3 days old, and you tickle it's belly enough while babysitting, it will fart. This can only be done once per babysit.
  • If a newborn baby is left bald/with little hair, and/or the player said the baby looked fine, the baby will grow hair over the course of its childhood. The hairstyle will be randomly chosen from the all the hairstyles, but will most likely be from its gender's hairstyles. If selecting the bald hairstyle after the baby was born, it will continue to have no hair until it's grown up, then you can change at will. This goes for any hairstyle.
  • Babies were not a present feature in Tomodachi Collection.
  • If you change a grown child's appearance, his/her past self in the Family Album will not reflect the new change. If you edit a Mii after it has appeared in a news report or family album, even if it was under the effects of Age-o-matic, his/her past self in the report or album will look the same as he/she does currently.
  • When the camera zooms in on the baby after its face is revealed, if you choose to keep its appearance, the camera stays zoomed in until the personality question. If you choose to edit the baby's face, the camera zooms out to show the parents the rest of the way through.
  • If the player chooses different head shape or hairstyle for the baby, it will keep it for the entirety of their time growing up.
  • When a child reaches stage 5, it can talk like its parents, albeit with a high-pitched variation of the Miis' talking sound.
  • If the baby is crying while the parents are playing peek-a-boo with it, all Miis present will be doing so instead of just the left Mii.
  • Sometimes with a 4-day old, you can hear it babble the song "Row, Row, Row Your Boat".
  • A 5-day old baby only makes sounds in the "spin the baby" game and in the home video of the family album, not counting the high-pitched whooping sound it makes when it talks.
  • If either one of the parents is sad or sick (either from a cold or stomach virus) on the day the child is born or has grown up, then the parents won't call you until you help the sad or sick parent.
    • The same happens if either of the parents are in a fight with another Mii, and especially moments after that fight fails.
  • If all houses currently have grown-up babies that can't leave their parents yet, then there's a possibility there won't be any problems, save for fights or wanting to play a game.
  • If you visit either of the parents at their house when their baby is at stage 6, when the parent(s) look at the player in surprise upon hearing the doorbell ring, the baby will do so as well. Unlike the parents, the child's eyes won't change to look surprised.
