Two parents looking after a day old baby.

baby is an optional Mii in Tomodachi Life, created when two Miis successfully marry and, at a later time, decide that they would like to have a baby. While having babies is optional, their existence is required to unlock certain features: such as child photos in the Photo Studio, and two of the rankings at the Rankings Board. However, note that babies won't be listed in the Town Hall's Mii List until their child stage, which rests at approximately four-five days old.

There is no limit as to how many babies can be born within a day, but only one baby can be taken care of by a single family at a time. You can have twins, but it is impossible to have more than one child born into the same family on the same day. Also, there is no restriction regarding how many babies can be born into a certain family, so a married couple may have had more children than there are apartments open.

If two married Miis have a child, either one or two of them will always be with the child until it grows up. Essentially, the married Miis will not divorce while still caring for a child, making babies the only true way to prevent a divorce from ever occurring.

In Tomodachi Life 2, when babies are born, they will be in the Hospital.

Having a Baby

Before any of the Miis can even think about getting a baby, they must first be married, as well as in good standing with each other, with both Miis being "Happy" or better. Then, one of the Miis will tell the player that they are thinking about having a baby, assuming that the Baby Option is enabled. If the player says yes, then the married couple will have a baby between 24 and 48 hours later. However, sometimes the married couple will not have a baby at all. Although the case is rare, the idea is possible. However, if they don't have a baby, it will not stop other attempts in the future.

When the baby arrives and the player is overlooking the island, a cyan telephone will appear and ring, with either the father or mother of the newborn baby on the other line. The player will come to the house of the parents. As the two Miis await happily, the female Mii will be witnessed holding the newborn baby. She will then proceed to ask the player a series of questions..

  • Were you hoping we had a boy or a girl? - The player can pick a gender- a boy or a girl- or have the game decide one at random. Upon answering, the baby's face is revealed, which is an obvious mix of the two parents' facial features.
  • How does he/she look? - The player can pick to keep the generated appearance, or edit the baby Mii's face. Editing the generated result is the only way a baby Mii's face can be modified until the baby becomes fully-grown.
  • We were thinking of [Name], what do you think? - The player can have the parents use their own, random preferred name, think of another, or name the newborn him/herself. Like with editing the face and personality, this cannot be changed until the baby is grown up.
  • What personality do you think he'll/she'll have? - The player can make the baby share the personality of its parents, have it picked randomly, or define the personality themselves. The result, in combination with its gender, will determine the color scheme of the baby's clothes. Once picked, it may not be edited until the baby is fully grown.

Color chart

Below is a list of possible colors a baby Mii's clothes will become once its personality is set. These change from day-to-day, but will maintain the same color the whole time.

Personality Male color Female color
Easygoing Green Orange
Outgoing/Energetic Yellow Red
Independent/Reserved Cyan Purple
Confident Blue Pink

Babysitting

When visiting the married couple's house, there is a 'Babysitting' option next to 'Visit'. This activates a minigame of sorts where the player either has to calm the baby down or play with them. Sometimes, the yellow telephone will ring and the player needs to calm the baby down.

The minigame for a day-year old baby is where the player holds the baby in their arms and have to rock them until they stop crying, or fall asleep. There is a different rhythm each time and it is randomly selected. If the baby cries angrier and louder because he/she is rocked too hard, the parents will become angry and the player will not win a prize.

The minigame for a 2-3 day old toddler is when the player has the option to play peek-a-boo or tickle them. It is random each time what action(s) will calm them down. Three spots are good for tickling, the top of the head, the chin or the tummy. If the player tickles the tummy, the toddler can fart only once per babysit. If the player does it wrong, the toddler will get angry and wants to be left alone and the player may lose the game and not get an item. If the player tickles the baby on the tummy when he/she doesn't want them to, the baby will give a signal by trying to shake the hand off. If the player doesn't stop, the baby will get upset. When the player wants to babysit the child, the minigame could start in three ways. The first way is when the baby is happy. The second way is when the baby is uncomfortable. The third way is when the baby has a normal expression. It will take a few actions to make the baby laugh or cry.

The minigame for a 4-5 day old child is a game in the backyard where the player spins the stylus on the touch screen to spin the child around. Occasionally, one of the parents will say that if the player keeps spinning the child so fast, the child might get dizzy. Contrary to what the parent says, the child can be spun indefinitely without getting dizzy. If the player doesn't do anything, the child will make noises. This minigame will not start via a phone call from one of the child's parents.

When a baby is first born, there is sometimes no option and the player is called to assist the new parents who can't seem to calm the baby and the player is asked to help. This will only happen at the baby and toddler stages.

If the player tries and succeeds in calming the baby down they will get a prize. If the player gives up, he/she will still get a prize for helping. If the player rocks the baby too hard, the parents will get angry and no prize will be won. You can only get a prize if the parent(s) call you to help.

It is also possible that a baby will cry if they and their family go to bed around 9 p.m., but in a situation like this, the cyan telephone won't ring. Instead, the player will hear crying sounds if they're on the island itself. To calm the baby down, go to Mii Homes, the house where the crying baby is, select 'Babysit', proceed in helping out and babysit until the baby stops crying. After this, select the 'return' icon and the family will sleep successfully. This only happens at stages 1-3.

Growing up

Baby1

Baby Miis won't be babies forever. Over the period of five days, the baby will grow from a baby, to a toddler, and then to a child. When the baby turns six days old, the player has the option of letting them move into the apartments, or sending them to the port as a traveler. At the end of the child's time growing up, the player will be rewarded with viewing a baby album and end credits.

These will be able to be reviewed in the Town Hall after the child has moved in or left to explore. There is a maximum of 50 albums that can be held. Any special child's album that the player wants to keep can be locked and kept forever.

There is only one chance to decide if the child stays or goes. There is no option for the player to change their mind afterwards. The traveling child will only return for a short visit and will never live on the island again. The child that stays is able to be edited at anytime with the exception of their gender and age if they get in a relationship.

If the player has lost track of how old the baby is, the following is a general guideline:

  • Day 1: The day on which the baby is born.
  • Day 2: The day where the baby learns to crawl.
  • Day 3: The day where the toddler starts standing up for a few seconds each time.
  • Day 4: The day where the toddler consistently starts walking, though quite slowly.
  • Day 5: The day where the child runs around efficiently and without problems.
  • Day 6: The day where the child grows up and leaves his/her parents.

Trivia

  • When a 4-day old baby is crying, it cannot be cheered up. When babysitting the 4-day old child by spinning it around, you can make it appear happy, but when you stop babysitting, it won't have improved by your actions. The best thing to do is to leave the baby alone and let time fly.
  • Sometimes, with a 2-3 day old, if you tickle it's belly (or the parent[s] are playing peekaboo while the baby is extremely happy), it will laugh so hard it will fall to the side before righting itself back into a sitting position.
  • If a newborn baby is left bald/with little hair, or the player said the baby looked fine, the baby will grow hair over the course of its childhood. The hairstyle will be randomly chosen from the all the hairstyles, but will most likely be from it's gender's hairstyles.
