BREAKUP

A breakup taking place in Tomodachi Life.

A breakup is when two Miis that are sweethearts or spouses end their romantic relationship with each other. Afterwards, the Miis will show up as each other's "Ex" in their relationships.

A breakup taking place in Tomodachi Collection

Breakups first occur in Tomodachi Collection, when two Mii's is low. The Mii states that "things haven't been going so well with [islander]", which the player can decide whether the Mii should move on or try to work things out.

If the player decides that the Mii should move on, it triggers a cutscene in the cafe where the Mii breaks up with their sweetheart by saying they are tired and want to be friends again, while leaving both Miis depressed.

If the player decides that the Mii should try to work things out, it will trigger a cutscene in the other Mii's apartment where they stand facing each other with the lights off and a clock ticking in the background. If the Mii succeeds, then they will hold their hand out as the lights turn on and suggest trying again as the other Mii responds in agreement. If it fails, the couple will crouch down, look at the floor, clutch the sides of their heads with both hands and rapidly shake their heads as a gong sounds. This results in the couple having to break up.

Breakups are used once again in Tomodachi Life, functioning almost exactly as its predecessor. In this game, however, the Mii breaking up will say their feelings have changed, instead of they are tired.

In Life, it is also possible for a Mii to confess their love to a Mii who is already dating. The dating Mii may accept the confession and leave their sweetheart for the confessor, with the former sweetheart gaining a sadness meter. There will be no breakup afterwards. This event is quite rare and only happens when the sweethearts have low relationship statuses with each other.

If a married couple breaks up, then upon visiting them, they will be in a depression. The one who broke up says "I guess we aren't meant to be together. At least not right now.", then "Breaking up with your sweetheart is really painful." While the other says "My heart has hurt since we broke up. It's not heartburn either.", then "What am I supposed to do now? I feel so lost."

If the two Miis were married, their house at Mii Homes will be completely demolished, leaving a vacant spot in its place until a new married couple occupies it.

Miis will not divorce or fight if they have a baby in their home, making babies the only surefire method of preventing breakups (they may fight, but not with their spouse).

Breakup Flashbacks

In addition, if the player goes to the apartment of the Mii that was broken up with and tap the icon, they will say "Will I ever recapture those happy times again?" and then displaying a cutscene showing moments when the two Miis were together. There are two versions of the flashback, a long and short version. The long version occurs if a Mii's sweetheart ditches for another Mii. The short version is if the two Miis that were sweethearts broke up after failing to work things out, or if the player tells the Mii to simply move on.

The first scene is on the beach. It starts with the Mii running away from its sweetheart as they chase each other along the water, then they splash each other. The male Mii wears swim trunks and the female Mii wears a bikini. This is followed by the "tropical beach" photo of them smiling and wearing their respective swim suits.

The next scene is the sweethearts playing tennis. After a few hits, the Mii hits the ball out into the distance, leaving their sweetheart to giggle as it looks on surprised. The Mii then winks. This is followed by the "Bokeh" photo of them in their current clothes, smiling, with hats removed.

The next few scenes take place in the Mii's apartment. The first is of the two in a back-and-forth conversation saying they love each other. In this first scene only, the Miis are wearing matching Vintage sweatshirts (but with their current hats). The Mii stands on the left wearing a red Vintage sweatshirt while the other stands on the right wearing a yellow one.

This is followed by the "holiday" photo of them (current clothes, neutral expression, hats removed). Next, the Mii tells a joke to their sweetheart using a random item, but the sweetheart was not paying attention.

The last scenes takes place shortly after the breakup, first the Mii playing tennis alone before giving up, followed by the "cherry blossoms" photo of the Miis (current clothes, neutral expression, hats removed). The final scene of the flashback is the Mii sitting on the beach, staring into the sunset alone.

If the player allows the Mii to move on or they fail to work things out, the tennis scenes are absent as well as the photos.

Other versions of the flashback can occur after the main flashback is played. Upon tapping the Mii's thought bubble, they will say "I can't stop thinking about all those happy times we had..." and 1 of 4 possible loops will play. The first one is of the Miis chasing each other on the beach. Two others are versions of the "I love you" scene of the flashback, but with the Miis repeatedly adding "really" to their conversation, or the Miis giving each other nicknames. Alternatively, the joke scene may play instead, where the Mii continues to whip out a random item and tell jokes, with the sweetheart giving a non-committal response every time. All of these are endless loops and continue until the player leaves except for the repeating phrase version, where it ends after the phrase has been said 19 times.

Cutscene Breakup

Park breakup

An example of breakup in this way, at the park.

Another way for two Miis to break up is by going to either the fountain, park, café, tower, beach or amusement park when a couple is currently there.

Upon entering either of these places, there is a chance a cutscene will automatically begin with the couple sitting together. The first Mii will say "We had a good run. Thanks for everything." or "Thanks for the great memories." Then, the other Mii will say "No, thank you." Then, a text box will read "[Mii 1] and [Mii 2] are back to being just friends." Afterwards, the view fades to white and the player is taken back to the island. When this occurs, neither of the two Miis will be depressed. This type of breakup can be avoided if the player does not enter any of the hangout areas or only enter the areas when a couple is not there at all.

The Miis who broke up this way will not have their lover listed as Ex-Sweetheart. Instead, they will be listed in friends.

Getting Back Together

Reconciliation 7

A Mii asking for reconciliation.

It is possible for Miis to get back together, depending on their relationship status. The procedure is similar to the way a Mii would confess their love, with a few differences. As melancholic music plays, one of the ex-lovers will admit they cannot stop thinking about the past with their lover, and requests that they get back together. Upon agreeing, they will relay their message to said love interest. The love interest could then ask in surprise if they really said that, before deciding they will think about it.

The scene that follows will always take place on the beach, and has a procedure similar to a confession. The Mii will ask if they want to give the relationship another try, and if it all goes well, the two Miis will return to being sweethearts; if they were married, their house will be rebuilt. An Age-o-matic that was used on either Mii will also return.

If not, the Mii will sink to the ground sadly as they become sad and heartbroken, but they will not gain sadness and their relationship does not decrease. Also in some cases, the ex would immediately refuse and ask the Mii if things are going okay, putting the Mii in sadness. It is possible for an ex-sweetheart to express this feeling even after their former love interest became involved with a different Mii. In this case, the new sweetheart can show up in place of the Mii's ex to tell them that they are with their former love interest now, and hope they are cool with that. The Mii will then go into a period of sadness. A friend of both Miis can also show up, saying that the asking Mii's ex is not interested in getting back together.

Trivia

Breakup cafe

A photo taken with a camera of a Mii being jealous of its ex-sweetheart.

  • Since breakup requests are random and in some cases unpredictable, with no way to back out once the player taps the Mii's thought bubble, players should check the Mii's Relationships with by pressing the L or R buttons if they want to prevent a breakup. In most cases, if the relationship level is very low (such as the relationship level being displayed as "Not getting along") by a Mii that is not in a fight, the player should return to the island and save immediately, then re-enter and select "Work it out". If the couple fails to resolve things, close the game without saving, re-enter and try again.
    • In addition, it is hard to tell if the couple can work things out or not.
  • It is entirely possible that a couple with low relationship levels will divorce or break up off-screen while the game is not played, without any orange problems indicating their desire for a divorce beforehand. The day following the divorce, only one Mii will be depressed.
  • If a sweetheart couple manages to successfully work things out, both statuses will become "Very much in love" (will revert back or go up depending on their previous status before a breakup). However, if a married couple successfully work things out, the statuses will remain the same, until they have a chance to breakup again or ask the player about their relationship.
  • In the Western versions, the music over the cafe's radio during the breakup cutscene is a somber, lower-key remix of the theme from the Compatibility Tester if two Miis get 80-89% rating.
  • Sometimes, when a Mii breaks up with their sweetheart, the Mii will not get depressed if they is involved in a fight or sick.
  • When a Mii takes a photo, they might capture a female/male going out with their sweetheart in the café, and the ex-sweetheart will be sad and jealous.
  • When two dating or married Miis have a huge fight, they could break up autonomously if not sorted out.
  • In the Japanese version, a Mii's spouse can be stolen by another Mii if that Mii has low relationships, leaving the other Mii in sadness and their house disappeared. In Western versions, nobody will fall in love with the married Mii.
  • If the Miis were sweethearts after breaking up, the asking Mii will get half bar of sadness. If the Miis were married, the asking Mii will get 3/4 bar of sadness.
    • In addition, the Mii being dumped will always have a full bar of sadness.
  • It is possible for a breakup or divorce to happen even with a good status. This happens if the asking Mii's apology is rejected, then one of the Miis will ask to break up or divorce.
  • In Tomodachi Collection, Miis cannot get back together after a breakup, like when two Mii friends will not say they are sick of fighting after failing to apologize.
