Tomodachi Life, known in Japan as Tomodachi Collection: New Life (トモダチコレクション 新生活 Tomodachi Korekushon: Shin Seikatsu?) and South Korea as Friend Gathering Apartment (친구모아 아파트,Chingumoa apateu) is a life simulation handheld video game for the Nintendo 3DS and the second game in the Tomodachi series, following the Japan-exclusive Nintendo DS title, Tomodachi Collection. It was released in Japan on April 18th, 2013, North America and Europe on June 6th, 2014, Australia on June 7th, 2014, and South Korea on July 17, 2014.

Gameplay

The gameplay is very similar to its predecessor, Tomodachi Collection, as this game also takes place on an island inhabited by various Miis, which the player can import from their 3DS, other devices, or QR Codes, or create from scratch using the 3DS' camera or the in-game creation tools.

Miis can then perform various actions, such as eating, trying on different outfits, visiting various facilities on the island, and doing many leisurely activities. As more Miis are introduced, many strange and curious interactions can occur between Miis, such as friendship, romance, rivalry, and even bizarre musical numbers.

If a male and female Mii get along well enough, they can start to date and even get married, creating their own house to live in together. Married Miis can even have children that will grow up in the house. Once the child gets old enough, it can live in its own apartment or go off as a traveler. Travelers will wait at the dock of the island. If the player StreetPasses with someone who also has Tomodachi Life, the traveler will go to the other person's island to visit.

Locations

Tomodachi Life features a wide variety of locations, more so than its predecessor, Tomodachi Collection.

Location Image Information
Island 1397135841-tomodachi-life The main hub world in the game, where every other location can be found.
Mii Apartments
TLMiiApartments
Mii Apartments is the apartment building where the player's Miis reside. By tapping on various windows, the player can interact with their Miis.
Food Mart Food Market The Food Mart is one of six shops featured on the island. The Food Mart is where the player can buy various food items to give to their islanders, which updates daily.
Clothing Shop Clothing The Clothing Shop is another shop featured on the island, serving as an area where the player can buy clothing for their islanders.
Hats Shop Hats The Hats Shop is a shop that serves to sell Hats to the player, which is a subcategory of clothing not sold in the Clothing Shop.
Interiors Interiors Title The Interiors Shop is a shop that sells interiors to the player, which updates every day. The shop is also known to have special interiors every month, as well as other interiors that are unlocked when a Mii reaches a certain level on the island.
Pawn Shop Pawn Shop The Pawn Shop is an area where the player can sell treasures that they no longer want.
Import Wear Import Wear Import Wear is very similar to the Clothing Shop and the Hat Shop, being an area that sells clothing to the player. The main difference, however, is the fact it sells items that are obtained from other islands via StreetPass, or clothes distributed by Nintendo through SpotPass.
Amusement Park Park The amusement park is an area that serves as general entertainment for the Miis, featuring attractions such as the rollercoaster, the ferris wheel, or the carousal. Various Miis can be seen riding these aforementioned attractions, or sitting around the park. The events held include the Magic Show, Tomodachi Quest, and the Night Market.
Beach Beach The beach is an area of the game where Miis hang out. The beach is also notable for hosting the Judgement Bay event. The beach is also an option as a location for a Mii who wants to confess their feelings for another.
Café Cafe The cafe is a restaurant where Miis can hang out. The events held here include Guys'/Gals' Hangout and Pity Party, although the latter can only occur if a Mii is depressed.
Observation Tower (NA/EU Only) Observation Tower The observation tower is an area that allows Miis to catch a view of the entire island, and can be seen watching from the fenced border that surrounds the top of the tower, if not sitting in the benches surrounding the fence. At the foot of the tower is a sports area that Miis typically use with sports gear, such as tennis rackets and baseball bats. The events held here include Quirky Questions. The Japanese version instead uses the roof of Mii Apartments.
Roof (JP Only)
RooftopJP
The roof of Mii Apartments is a location that serves as the Japanese equivalent of the observation tower, being where Miis can view the entire island and hang out, the latter option being a typical pastime in Japanese culture. The roof lacks the sports area that the observation tower includes, and instead has the Miis use sports gear out in the open (for instance, a Mii may hit a tennis ball against the doorway that leads back to Mii Apartments).
Fountain Fountain UStitle The fountain is an area returning from Tomodachi Collection, retaining its purpose as a public hangout place where Mii can talk or exercise. In addition to the returning donations and Morning Market events, the fountain includes two additional events not present in Collection, that being Rap Battle and Word Chain. It can also be an option as a location to take a Mii on a date in the European version.
Park Park The park is an open, public area that is the most commonly visited by Miis, which can be seen walking around a path or sitting on the bench on top of the large hill at its center. Miis can also use soccer balls in the field past the path, or will lay down on the grass. The events include Flying Disc, Afternoon Market, BBQ, and Photo Shoot. When a Mii has a baby, and it grows up, there will be a memo. At the end of it there will be a video of when the Mii was younger, and it's been videotaped in the park.
Mii News Mii News Mii News is a news program that broadcasts news at 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Although usually humorous news reports are given, the service can also broadcast events on the island, such as a new area being opened.
Mii Homes
TLMiiHomes
Mii Homes is a series of houses that married couples can live in, in addition to their apartments. If a baby was born, the player can babysit them here.
Campground Campground title The campground is an area that travelers stay in when they arrive on the island. Typically, they will have a problem that needs to be solved, and will thank the player with gratitude after they leave.
Port Port The port is an area that travelers use when leaving the island. Various import items can come in through the port.
Concert Hall Concert Hall The concert hall is an area where Miis can perform their own songs, taking the place of the mechanic where Miis sing in their apartment, from Tomodachi Collection. The player can also organize Miis that know the same genre into groups.
Compatibility Tester Compatibility Tester The Compatibility Tester returns from Tomodachi Collection, serving as an area to test the chemistry of two islanders. A new feature to this version is the fact it also includes a Compatibility Forecast, a mechanism that predicts how well two Miis will get along in the coming week.
Rankings Board Rankings Board The Rankings Board is an area that ranks Miis based on certain facts, such as popularity, charm, and vitality.
Photo Studio Photo studio The Photo Studio is an area that allows Miis to take photos on various backgrounds. These photos can be saved to the 3DS' SD Card.
Plane (Western Only) Plane The plane is a vehicle that allows access to the Nintendo 3DS Image Share service.

Development

Daytime Island

The island.

After failing to localize Tomodachi Collection, due to voice translation issues, Western audiences still had not gained a proper game in the Tomodachi series. Thus, when Tomodachi Collection: New Life was released in Japan in 2013, people thought that Life would never reach the west. In 2014, however, Nintendo announced a western release of the game as Tomodachi Life.

Reception

Upon its release in the west, social rights activists widely criticized the game for not supporting same-sex marriage in the game, which was considered unorthodox in western civilization. Nintendo apologized for this, and says that the next game will feature same-sex marriage.

On a side note, the game has received mostly positive reviews since its release. IGN gave a positive rating of 8.4, saying how surprisingly funny and rewarding the game is. Upon launch in Japan, the game sold 404,858 units on the first day of release.

Tomodachi Life is the tenth best selling game for the 3DS, selling over 6.55 million copies worldwide as of December 31, 2019.
